Living Waters - Critical Haiti Update
Dear Friends of Living Waters for the World,
LWW Haiti Network Coordinating Team moderators Chris McRae and Bob McCoy have completed their assessment in Haiti. The ability for these dedicated volunteers to get into Haiti this quickly required hard work, both human and divine intervention, and we are grateful for their safe return.
Their official trip reports span several pages – here is a summary of key findings/recommendations:
1. All of our Haitian partners and their families are unhurt! They were deeply grateful to see Bob and Chris as tangible proof that we are partners with them, even through the chaos, death and destruction of this massive earthquake.
2. Six of nineteen clean water systems were destroyed. This is particularly remarkable given that the epicenter of the earthquake was near Leogane, which has been the center of our work since 2001. Note: Valdez Innocent, one of our full-time employees, immediately went to several damaged sites, crawling into destroyed buildings to salvage as much equipment as possible. Using parts from several systems, Valdez soon had a new system pumping out clean water!
3. LWW system sites that were unharmed are continuing to produce water to the best of their abilities. Note: After the earthquake, our partners at our first solar installation, located in Arcahaie, immediately began producing clean water seven days per week, 24 hours per day.
4. Following the Priority Plan of Action for Haiti mentioned in our last communication, destroyed systems will be rebuilt as soon as possible, with first priority given to reconstructing the building and system at the orphanage in Leogane, where presently 100 orphans are now homeless.
We thank you for your prayers and financial support thus far. To date, donors have contributed and pledged $41,000 toward our clean water system rebuilding and expansion efforts in Haiti. This is a great start. Significantly more funds are needed – at least $100,000 in total – to fully implement our Priority Plan for Haiti.
We continue to need your help!
